Rules and Regulations for the State of Louisiana

Sales Tax Law:

Louisiana governor John Edwards, in 2017, signed HB 396 into law. The bill impacts purchases of platinum, gold, or silver bullion that is valued solely upon its precious metal content, whether in coin or ingot form. It also impacts numismatic coins that have a sales price of no more than one thousand dollars ($1,000) and numismatic coins that are sold at a national, statewide, or multi-parish numismatic trade show.

NPMEX is required to collect tax on some items shipping to Louisiana, however sales tax will not be charged for Gold, Silver, or Platinum bullion items or numismatic coins priced under $1,000 as they are exempt from sales tax when shipping to a Louisiana address.

The State of Louisiana requires the collection of sales taxes on certain products sold by NPMEX and delivered to a Louisiana address. These taxes must be collected on (1) bullion products made of palladium or copper; (2) any Numismatic coin with an individual sales price exceeding $1,000; (3) accessory items; and (4) processed items.

The following definitions apply to products on which taxes must be collected in Louisiana:

  • Numismatic Coins: Coins with an external value above and beyond the base value of the underlying Precious Metal, due to the item’s rarity, condition, age or other external factor.
  • Accessory Items: Items such as holders, tubes or coin flips.
  • Processed Items: Precious Metals that have been processed by third parties into items valued on more than their Precious Metal content, such as jewelry, statues or colorized coins. Sales taxes in Louisiana are calculated at checkout on the NPMEX website based on (1) the taxability of products sold by NPMEX in Louisiana set forth above, and (2) the specific tax rates established by the taxing jurisdiction of the delivery address in Louisiana.

Capital Gains Tax:

Gold and silver are subject to capital gains taxation when exchanged for Federal Reserve notes or when used in barter transactions.
